A childcare learning centre certainly stretched my ideas of safety, the Managing Director of Tui Learning centre’s asked me to build a replacement cupboard that was more fit for purpose (less height for better supervision and more storage), she told me that they like to have the centers feel more like a home environment for the children.
Because my grandson is always in a hurry and never looks where he is going, I was concerned about the sharp edges of the unit, therefore I dressed all the edges of the wood with a half round pine trim, all the screws used were brass for appearance and to match other furnishings.
The build was a natural finish except for the shelves, they were painted in a low VOC Dulux Aquanamel and wood was finished with a wipe on polyurethane which was the best option for an environment full of children.
The finished result allowed better viewing supervision of the room and much more storage space for toys. Brief accomplished.
